Native New Yorkers: Native Americans in New York City
Primary tabs

Humans were in New York City for thousands of years before European explorers Giovanni da Verrazzano and Henry Hudson visited in 1524 and 1609, respectively. Native Americans lived, farmed, fished, hunted, traded, and played throughout North America, and that included New York City. We’ll explore areas of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan where Native Americans lived and will try to imagine what their lives were like before the Europeans. We’ll also discuss the impact of Europeans after their arrival, how Native Americans continue to influence the City, visit the site of a massacre, and discuss the fate of Native Americans in New York.
