Don't confuse the Bronx River Greenway with the Putnam Trail. The Putnam (a/k/a South County, North County, and Empire State Trail) features smooth pavement, gentle hills, gentle curves, and requires of the cyclist such little concentration that you could easily zone out and still reach your destination. The Bronx River Greenway, OTOH, demands your full attention with its sharp turns, short but steep climbs, narrow bridges to go over, low bridges to go under, and an unpaved section that can become a sea of mud. Which is why it is so much fun to ride.

We meet at 242nd St & Broadway, just inside Van Cortlandt Park, 2 blocks south of the rest rooms. The ride begins with 5 miles on the Putnam and 1 mile on Palmer Road and then continues for 12 miles on the Bronx River Greenway to Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. Riding to the top of the dam is optional. Lunch is at the plaza; bring your lunch or pick up en route. For the return to Van Cortlandt we simply flip the route.
