Heroes of the North – A Civil War Union Monuments Ride

Due to the NYC Marathon this ride is rerouted.  It is now a 23 mile ride, solely in Manhattan.

Over the last two years there was much conflict in our country over the removal of statues and monuments honoring Confederate leaders in the Civil War.  For example, in September the City of Richmond, Virginia removed the statute of Robert E. Lee, its last Confederate statue.

Here in New York there are many monuments dedicated to the heroes of the Union Army who fought for the freedom for all people.  We all know of President Ulysses Grant and General William Tecumseh Sherman.  But who was General Franz Sigel, John Ericsson or General Daniel Butterfield? All have monuments in New York honoring them for their part in defending the Union, but why?  Ride with us and you’ll find out.

Starting and ending at Riverside Drive & 97th Street we’ll take a 23 mile ride in Manhattan to visit eight Union Civil War monuments and learn about those they honor.

Join us for a little history, some camaraderie and a good workout.

Logistics

Registration is unlimited.  This is a Moderate Ride, not a Happy Face Ride.  We’ll keep a good pace so please don’t sign up unless you are comfortable with a faster pace for 23 miles.

Rain may cancel this ride.  Check this site the morning of the ride to see if the ride has been canceled.

Start Time is 9:30 A.M.   Remember that Daylight Savings Time ends on the day of this ride, so you get an extra hour of sleep.

Helmets are required on all 5BBC rides. Bring a bike in good condition, a bike lock (lunch), a spare inner tube and water.  Bring money for lunch.  We're still in a pandemic so wear a face covering and keep social distance.
