Cycling Cornucopia (biking + gear browsing/shopping + meanding Governors island)
Saturday, September 11, 2021 - 08:00

This shall be fun, and it's quite the cornucopia of "things cycling" in and about NYC.

We warm up with a southern/short loop of Central Park, then head over to and down the Hudson Greenway, all for some nice steady cycling as best possible/safe with shared access roads and path, and all before the Greenway and park get busy. That adds up to some nice mileage and steady pacing to tune up the cycling legs.

Hi ho, then it's to the Brooklyn Bike Jumble we roll, timed to arrive at 10AM "opening" when hopefully bargains and inventory abound. Lock our bikes and walk around . . searching for the hidden jewel or treasure we want or need as we revel in bike democracy in action and a nice interlude of browsing, bargaining, etc at the Rumble. We can visit 5BBC's table plus do some voluntary spreading of the good word and cheer about our club.

Then we coast downhill over to the nearby Red Hook ferry to Governors Island with our bikes (our group has reserved free tix for the 11:45AM ferry) and have fun meandering and exploring on G.I (exhibits, vistas, people fun, old forts, buildings, etc.). We'll picnic at a suitable scenic spot during our rambols. It's their Fall Arts Week, there's Jazz by the Water, exhibits, forts, buildings, and lots to see. Loosie goosie timing for the return ferry (we're targeting the 3:30PM ferry return to Red Hook for our group ticket, and possibly can use the Pier 6 Brooklyn Bridge Park ferry), then bike to Manhattan on the Manhattan Bridge. Riders have option of aiming for an earlier ferry, or buying open tix and lining up for the NYC ferry to Pier 11 Wall Street.

Ride limited to 8 riders + 2 leaders. Advanced moderate due to mileage and need to ride strategically as a group (and safely) over shared recreation paths, etc. (good bike handling skills and awareness required). BYO lunch, and hydration, fare for ferry (in case). Cue sheet and intra-trip scheduling provided to confirmed riders in advance of ride.

START  Krebs Model Sailboat Pond boathouse in Central Park (it's just N of E72St. park entrance at Fifth Ave., at about the E74th St equivalent if that street crossed central park and then high-jumped the stone fence). Be on time for real, please.  Restrooms in Krebs red brick model boathouse building.

FINISH  Bklyn side of ferry (leader will be biking back over Manhattan Bridge with a veggie acquisition stop at Canal St vendors in the eaves of the bridge; you're welcome to join in for that).

BRING:  LUNCH as there will be no food acquisition stop per se (though you might grab something from a food cart or local deli during our allotted browsing time at the Bike Rumble).  Proof of vaccination (for indoor space viewings at Gov. Island).  IDNYC card if have; Senior citizen card or such; we can get freebie ferry rides with either of those, free bike transfers included.  MASK need be worn suitably when closer than 6', at stops, start, inside buildings/ferry, etc,  CARRY CAPACITY on bike in case you acquire any goodies at the Rumble. And good LOCKing ability for bike. The usual bike gear (tubes/pump/patch kit, any specifics for your bike, etc). WEAR If you do have any club logo paraphenalia or bike jersey; let's identify with the club and help club advertising at the Jumble!
