Legends of Addisleigh Park

Jazz and Sports Heroes Ride
Jazz and Sports Heroes Ride
Saturday, September 25, 2021 - 10:00

David "Fats" Meltzer and Martial "The Count" Henrys, welcome you to the Addisleigh Park Ride.  The Addisleigh Park Historic District of St. Albans is the home of legends.  The historic district covers 422 houses built between the 1910s and 1930s for white buyers only. That didn't stop Addisleigh Park from becoming a magnet for prominent African-Americans - lawsuits be damned. In 1952, the magazine Our World called Addisleigh Park home to the “richest and most gifted” African-Americans in New York.  Musical talent includes Fat's "Aint Misbehavin'" Waller, Count Basie, Lena Horn, Ella Fitzgerald and The Godfather of Soul, James Brown.  On the "wrong side of the tracks" is sax great John Coltrane. But there were more than musicians here.  Famous baseball players included Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella - and strangely enough - Babe Ruth.  The neighborhood is beautiful and a delight to ride in.

This will be a moderate paced ride as we will be covering a lot of ground.  THIS IS A PICNIC RIDE - IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU BRING A LUNCH, AS WE WILL BE DINING IN ROY WILKINS PARK.  Also bring the normal things that you take on a ride including pumps, levers, tubes, snacks and of course, a sense of curiosity.

This ride is limited to 20 club members.  Please register online for this ride, and make sure to unregister if you cannot make it.
