Three Queens Ponds

Saturday, March 20, 2021 - 10:15

Our ultimate destination in this ride is tiny Potamogeton Pond.  This is a small kettle pond left over from the glacial era, and spared when the Grand Central Parkway was constructed in the 1930s.  Last year, the only time that we actually saw water in the pond was in early spring.  We hope that history repeats itself and there is indeed a pond at Potamogeton Pond.  Along the way we hit two other ponds in Queens, Willow Lake in Flushing Meadow Park and Goose Lake in Captain Tilly Park.  And since we will be in the neighborhood, we will have a picnic lunch at lovely Oakland Lake.  On the way back we ride along the waterfront of the Michael's Mile as well as the Flushing Bay Marina.  This is a nice scenic route.

This ride is part of the 5BBC Spring Training Series.  While we will indeed stop at the three ponds to take it in, we do not intend to dawdle.  There is an elevation gain of over 1,000 feet, with the steepest ascent pegged at 6.5%.  It's about getting back in biking shape after the long and snowy winter.

This ride is limited to ten riders.  The starting location will be provided to those who are on the ride.  We will also be practicing all Covid protocols including masks when we are stopped and social distancing.  The lunch spot does not have any food to purchase, so it is essential that you bring lunch and snack with you.  Also, take the usual things that you take on a bike ride - tubes, pump, levers, etc.
