Old Field Lighthouse Plus

Early Spring Training Edition
Early Spring Training Edition
Friday, March 12, 2021 - 10:45

We did this ride for the first time in the spring of 2018 and it was wonderful, scenic, quickly turned into a new classic and is a ride not to be missed. Forecast forecast Friday is quite good, so we are adding another ride for this week. Ride may be accessed by either automobile or public transporation (LIRR).

The ride makes its way from Ronkonkoma north by Stony Brook, to the historic Setaukic area and up around scenic Strong’s Neck. From there we head over and then up to Old Field Lighthouse and then down to a real hill by Head of the Harbor and then south near Lake Ronkonkoma.  Overall the ride definitely has some, but not too many real hills, excellent for early spring training.  This is an advanced moderate ride where we will keep a decent early season pace, but will wait for everyone to regroup after the various hills.  We prefer to ride as a group, but will utilize point-drop-sweep at times.

Normally, we would stop and pick up lunch, but under the current circumstances, please bring your lunch, snacks and sufficient hydration, as it is very unlikely that we will stop to pick up food.  Also, as the ride starts late, please be sure to eat a good breakfast and have snacks as a lunch stop will also likely be late.  Most importantly bring an upbeat inquisitive attitude ready to explore new and unknown areas.

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS: A reminder that you must register for the ride and that the exact start location will be forwarded to the registered riders.  Please 'unregister' if you can not make the ride so waited list folks can move up and take the slot.  All riders should come equipped with a mask, hand sanitizer/wipes, a spare tube, sunscreen, snacks and a bike in good condition, as well as being familiar with the current criteria for riding with the club.
