A jaunt in Queens

Tuesday, November 17, 2020 - 10:00

Let's ride around Queens and see some sights.

We'll visit Fort Totten and various parks (Queensbridge, Rainey, Astoria, Little Bay, Alley Pond, Cunningham, Kissena and Flushing Meadows).  We'll ride the scenic Joe Michaels Mile (actually, 2.5 miles; who named this?)  We'll also ride the Queens Boulevard bike path (don't be scared of its infamous moniker, The Boulevard of Death ... but do be careful since some drivers thereon seriously need to take refresher courses from the DMV :-)

We will picnic at Oakland Lake about halfway through the ride so bring your lunch as there is no planned lunch pickup stop.

The only "significant" hills are when we approach Alley Pond Park (interspersed between mile 17 and 19), but nothing over a 5.5% grade.  The route is pretty flat elsewhere.

The ride begins in Long Island City (western Queens).  The exact starting location will be emailed to the first 8 registered members.

Please "Unregister" if you subsequently decide that you cannot join the ride so that members on the wait list can assume your spot.  It's the couteous thing to do.

Although the route mileage is about 35, there are a couple of options that will increase the mileage about 5 miles.

Bring the usual bike repair equipment (spare tubes, multi-tool, etc.).

Bring snacks and hydration.  Dress appropriately for the forecasted weather that day.  The ride could be cancelled due to weather so keep an eye on this ride listing for any updates.

Be familiar with the Club guidelines for riding during COVID.  Bring and wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth at all times including while riding and except while drinking or eating (but maintain social distancing).  Bring hand sanitizer.

Please ensure that your bike is in good working order and that you can maintain a moderate speed range.
