Rockaway Green Market & Farm Tour
Primary tabs

Join us as we ride from Brooklyn to Rockaway to shop and take a tour of a successful youth-led Urban Farm Stand in partnership with GrowNYC. The Rockaway Youth Task Force began as a response to the widespread damage to the Rockaway peninsula after Superstorn Sandy, resulting in the closing of many small stores and supermarkets. Lack of healthy food options in the wake of this destruction, particularly for lower-income families and individuals in the Arverne Rockaway community prompted Rockaway Youth Task Force members to develop sustainable solutions for access to locally grown, low clost fresh produce that could be easily available to the residents. The result was the successful launching of a youth-led Farmers Market and the building of one of the largest youth-run community Gardens on an empty lot secured through the NYC Parks Dept.
Let's help to support the farm and the neighborhood! You can buy fresh vegetables, pumpkins, apples, pies, honey. Bring a back pack or bike pannier to bring back your purchases. We will be picking up lunch in Rockaway at Goody's BBQ Chicken & Ribs West Indian Restaurant to eat picnic style back at the farm. We may stop at Mara's Ice Cream Parlor before heading back to the mainland.
This will be a moderate ride (12-13 mph) in the front and the back will accommodate Happy Face riders. You must be able to keep your speed at 10mph in the back. Please feel comfortable riding over two bridges.
The first 12 registrants will be emailed the start location in the area of Prospect Park 3 days before the ride. Please check ride listing for any weather updates.
If you sign up then need to cancel, please contact me (tobyny1@gmail.com) and delete your name so that a waitlister can join the ride. It's the courteous thing to do.
Make sure your bike is in good working order. Please bring your helmet, mask, spare tube, hydration and hand sanitizer.
