Wonderful new major park + the good, bad, some ugly of Queens waterfront
Wonderful new major park + the good, bad, some ugly of Queens waterfront

We're going to explore the fantastic and design award winning Hunters Point South Waterfront Park, which does for a reclaimed Long Island City waterfront wasteland what the design quality of the High Line did for an abandoned rail bed. Phases of Queens' newest park are now complete, so within that park we'll bike where we can, and walk some with our bikes, to delight in it all. The area was designed to be flood tolerant, complete with natural drainage, wetlands, walkways, bikeways, stunning vistas, and a striking cantilevered overlook.  Check it out at: http://www.weissmanfredi.com/project/hunters-point-south-waterfront-park

Then the route follows Queens' coastline North by NorthEast as closely as pragmatic and possible, hitting many parks along the waterfront and on ramboling route (last weekend we scored 22 in Brooklyn; this time, 19!). There will be a cue sheet and maps we've created, but a bit will be on the fly, with possible occasional detour or retracing.  Route will have bike lanes, bike greenways, quiet residential and side streets, and a few busy roads, so be prepared with biking skills and spirit of adventure (ergo the Advanced Moderate listing for some pacing "with verve" as well as requisite cycling skills).

Ride limited to 8 riders and 2 leaders. We will ride as a group, no point/drop/sweep unless needed in a few spots. Bring the usuals and for sure bike tube(s) and pump; hydration; mask; and substantial snacks and pocket food for replenishment on the go. If the group decides, we'll have a food-to-go acquisiiton stop in Flushing (weather permiting). Ride ends at Flushing Main Street subway, with possible extension to 59th Street Bridge. ETA at finish 1-1:30.

Any cancellation will be posted by 10PM the night before, and ride will still go out if it's only reasonably light showers/rain (particularly later in the day; for which, being of good sense, we would shorten the route, but we still reallly, really, REALLY want to explore that lovely new Hunters Point South Park).

All bikes OK but hybrid type the best, as we'll be on paved roads but some gritty industrial/urban portions and who knows how often those streets are swept!. Wear shoes you can walk in (so cleats may not be the best unless you have covers).
