It’s Halloween and this ride visits the home and town of Washington Irving, the famous early 19th century author whose story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and its character the Headless Horseman are celebrated at Halloween. We head north from the #1 Train and ride through the scenic Hudson River towns of Yonkers, Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry and Irvington. We’ll stop at Sunnyside to see Washington Irving’s meticulously restored home. (Tours are selling out and may not be available.)

From Sunnyside we’ll continue north on Broadway to the Statue of the Headless Horseman and the Old Dutch Church, where the Headless Horseman is supposedly buried. Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden and William Rockefeller are all buried in the adjoining cemetery. 

Afterwards we’ll head south on Broadway to Lefteris Restaurant for excellent Greek food, followed by an optional short walk around Tarrytown. From there we’ll continue south and east to the South County Trail, where we’ll ride back to Van Courtland Park and the end of the #1 Train.

Note:  Part of this ride is on the unpaved Old Croton Aqueduct.  However, this part  of the OCA is suitable for street bikes.

Bring a bike in good condition, water, a bike lock, a spare inner tube, and money for lunch.  If the tour of Sunnyside is available it will cost $16.
