“Let There Be Light!” That is not so hard to do if you are you know WHO. But try inventing a lightbulb that does not burn out…well,  that is another story and a story that would come thousands of years later. It was Edison who found the right man to do the job, Lewis Latimer, son of fugitive slaves. This patent draftsman, and former Union soldier, invented the incandescent lightbulb using a carbon filament made from bamboo. Not only did Lewis Latimer work with Edison to perfect the light bulb, but with Alexander Graham Bell as well, helping Bell to patent the telephone. We will visit the Lewis Latimer House and Museum in Flushing, Queens and learn about his inventions, his artwork, his poems and how this Renaissance man was considered one of the greatest African American inventors. We will visit the house he lived in from 1903-1928.  Bring lock and money for lunch at a local Italian restaurant. (honoring another inventor, Antonio Meucci, inventor of the telephone before Bell’s patent) Donation for the House and Museum is $5. Rain at start cancels.
