Long-time club member Ken Coughlin suggested we ride up to White Plains to watch our local WNBA team, the New York Liberty, play the conference-leading Connecticut team. The game is at the Westchester County Center, which is practically across the street from the Bronx River Pathway and 1/4-mile from the White Plains Metro North station, making it a beautiful, less than 30-mile ride from Manhattan.
Ken says that the games -- which start at 3 pm on weekends -- are a lot of fun. Team management puts on a great show with lots of fan involvement activities when the teams aren't actually on the floor. And the team itself is playing close to .500 ball and has some exciting players (including Tina Charles, one of the league’s leading scorers; a recent acquisition from China who is 6 foot 9; and a new guard from France who is amazingly quick).
We’d leave from Central Park, take the bucolic Bronx River Pathway once we get to Westchester, and enjoy a late lunch at a great diner near the arena. The games typically end a little after 5, after which riders would then have the option of riding home on their own or taking Metro North at White Plains.
Ken’s niece works for the team so she can get us a good deal on tickets. The arena is small so practically any seats are terrific. The price for center seats would be $25, which is $10-$15 off what someone would normally pay, and she could give us a block so we'd all sit together.
If you’re interested, we need a commitment on number of tickets by July 31 at the latest. If it rains that day, ticket holders would have to take the train (or get wet). We wouldn't get a ride in but we'd be guaranteed a fun afternoon.
