Beach Bum Ride to Orchard Beach

Via the Ferry at Soundview
Via the Ferry at Soundview
Saturday, August 31, 2019 - 09:45

We bypass the Upper East Side, Randalls Island, the bridges, and the congestion, and head straight to idyllic Classon Point in Soundview. From there, if you've been on the East Bronx Shore Busters ride, we head due east, hugging the coast as we pass through Pugsley Creek, Castle Hill Point, St. Raymond's Cemetery, Trump Links at Ferry Point, Throggs Neck, Maritime College, Locust Point, The Park at Edgewater, Cherry Tree Point (alas condos have replaced the cherry tree), Evers Marina, Huntington Woods, Pelham Bay Parkway Bridge, a stop at Johnny's Reef at the tip of City Island, for lunch (some of us will bag it with sandwiches from Barino's Market or Loretta's Pizza). Fortified, we'll then visit Orchard Beach for a dip, while some of us will explore the trails and/or wade out to Twin Island (at low tide it is walkable). On the return we will either backtrack (since the east end side of the Bronx that we traveled up has relatively low traffic), or cross the Bruck and Hutch and wad into:  the Saturday afternoon shopping mall traffic. (The upside is some of us can take the train from Westchester Sq-E. Tremont station if we do the second option.)

Meet at the 34 Street ferry stop at 9:45 AM (email if you are getting on at Wall or 96 streets) to get your tickets and be ready to board the 10:07 to Soundview. The return is via Soundview with ferries to 96, 34, and Wall streets at: 3:12, 3:46, 4:20.
