Alleys of Old Canarsie

Canarsie has long been a euphemism for "the ends of the earth."  It was never easy to get here, and it always seemed somewhat removed.  Canarsie is also damn old.   The streets that we ride over today are the usurpers of the original colonial street system.  Those old streets have mostly been plowed under as farms disappeared and development marched on.  And yet, for some reason a few of these old streets remain.  This ride visits some of these historic streets - from the wonderfully named Varken's Hook Road, and fellow Dutch survivor Schenck Place,  to the L shaped Matthews Place.  We ride on atmospheric Church Lane [Formerly called "The Road To Lott's House"] alongside ancient Canarsie Cemetery.

This is my first Lead since coming back off the Disabled List - so the ride will be short flat, and fun.    Remember to bring lights.  We expect to be back before dark - but darkness falls like a hammer these days. Lunch is relatively late in the ride so bring snacks, along with the standard lock and spare tube.

After our scenic dallying along these Canarsie Lanes, we head back via the Mill Basin Kosher Deli which will be our lunch spot.  Few things beat hot chicken soup on a cold winter day.
