Wave Hill . . for coffee, views, and back early

Saturday, January 27, 2018 - 08:00

Early-ish morning ride to a lovely destination, the wonderful Wave Hill estate/park/museum/botanical gardens overlooking the Hudson from its perch in Riverdale. Not impressively long on mileage, but there's tons of "pretty" both during our cycling and at our destination.

We'll take the new bridge at Riverside Drive/151 Street to fly over the highway, and then the Greenway/river bike trail north (it does get more than a tad hilly and wild as we rise to the bridge level after Dyckman St). We reach the Bronx via the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge, then climb a few Riverdale hills to Wave Hill gardens.

It's free entry Saturday mornings, and their onsite cafe is in a neat site and a great place for a caz bev or nosh.

Our return is along the easterly edge of Manhattan, finishing at the visitor center on the northern edge of Central Park, at Harlem Meer.

Greenway or bike lanes most of the way, and some mixed volume streets (mostly on the return) We'll ride as a group, collecting at hills/rises, and do a Point-Drop-Sweep only if an occasion really needs it.

Cloudy or light drizzle won't cancel, but do check with leader via email the night before if weather looks very wet or very questionable. Ride would be canceled by 9PM the night before if conditions turn negative.

START:  8:00 AM sharp at rest rooms in Claremont Playground park (West side of Riverside Drive, at about W. 123rd St, up a slight rise, near the restrooms) immediately north of Grant's Tomb.

FINISH:  ETA by noon at Harlem Meer (lake), Charles Dana Discovery Center, just inside W110/Central Park. There are rest rooms in the center, plus a neat exhibit.

BRING:  Print/bring the attached cue sheet, plus bring the usuals (tubes, patch kit, pump. hydration, etc.). Dress for the weather; layers probably good idea.

SHORTER OPTION:  Take the #1 subway line back to Manhattan from the start of that line atl W242 St. & B'way.

TIP:  We must lock our bikes at racks just inside Wave Hill's main entrance, near the guard house, so be prepared to BYO locking equipment and be on a bike that will tolerate it, plus have shoes you're comfy walking in.
