Hilly Scout to Watchung Mountains and NJ Highlands

Sunday, July 16, 2017 - 07:00

Join us on a brisk and hilly century that starts with a surprisingly pleasant trip through the Meadowlands, hits four undeveloped reservations straddling the Watchung Mountains, then cuts through the Great Swamp to take on some higher peaks in Morristown National Historic Park and the New Jersey highlands. Along the way we'll scout some seldom-traveled roads and trails, including short unpaved and/or hardpack segements. We will climb 7,532 feet over 104 miles, though the first 25 miles are relatively flat. The route is largely a combination of the "Four Reservations” 5BBC ride plus a good chunk of the annual "Revolutionary Ramble" group ride run by the Morristown Freewheelers.

This is a quick spin so there will be no point-drop-sweep unless unexpected circumstances require it. We will ride together, striving to maintain 18 MPH on the (occasional) flats and pausing to regroup at the top of climbs (or in other words, to wait for Steve to make it up the hill!). Drafting is optional and consensual. Fifty-five miles in, we will take lunch al fresco at the eateries across the street from the Summit station (NJ transit), which provides a convenient trip back for those who'd like to join us for the first half of the ride. There will also be short food/rest stops at the 34- and 76-mile marks.

We'll take New Jersey Transit back from Morristown to Penn Station leaves 23 minutes after each hour. We'll shoot for the 5:23, arriving at Penn at 6:39, but no promises.
