This 47.9 miles/ 2,689ft elevation gain ride meets at City Hall from where we take the Path Train to Newark Penn station, NJ.  The first few miles in Newark are on busier roads lined with houses that reflect the architecture of its hay days.  In Maplewood quiet suburban streets lead us to the South Mountain Reserve, Little Falls, the Great Fall Meadows where we switch back to larger roads to get to Madison where we catch the train home.

In the first 23 miles we gain most of the elevation, climbing and coasting up on rolling hills, with one exception of a very steep hill, just before we indulge in savory and/or sweet Crepes at the Landauer Cafe at 32 mile.  Since there is no lunch stop we are have only 28 minutes and 56 seconds to devour these delicious crepes.

Break Places:

15.9 mile: Dunkin Donuts, West Orange  (10 min and 34 seconds)

32 mile: Landauer Cafe, 632 US-202, Towaco, NJ 07082 (28 minutes and 56 seconds and give and take 5 milliseconds).

Don’t forget to bring:

  • MTA card or NJTransit card for the PathTrain.
  • Return NJTransit ticket from Madison to New York Penn Station.
  • Bring bungee cords to secure your bike on the train.
  • Snacks.
  • 2x spare tubes.
  • Cash for lunch.

Sunset is at 4:30pm.  We need to keep a descent average speed to get to Madison before dusk.  We try to catch the 3:31pm or 4:31pm train out of Madison. Average speed is 15-17 mph (on flat). Road bikes only.

Meeting time is 8:15 am at City Hall.
