North Salem/Pound Ridge

Sunday, July 17, 2016 - 06:15

We're quick-spinning to some of the most remote and beautiful sections of upper Westchester and Connecticut this week on a ride structured in segments allowing folks to drop in for parts of the ride.  There are 73-mile and 100-mile options, as well as a full NYC round trip 132-mile options; Ride with GPS DRAFT route available here: link.

The full ride begins and ends at the Dana Center in Central Park (W. 110th between 5th & Lenox).  We will head north on the Putnam/South County Greenway at a brisk pace, arriving at the Mt. Kisco Metro North station (37 mile-mark) by 9:00 am. Folks who want to join us there should take the train departing from Grand Central at 7:50 to Mt. Kisco.  You will get into Mt. Kisco at 8:51 and we will meet up at the Subway shop by the Mt. Kisco station.  Please send and email to vaccaro500@gmail.com NO LATER THAN 8:00 A.M. on the day of the ride if you plan on meeting us in Mt. Kisco.

We will then head east and north, deep into upper Westchester to explore the gorgeous, low-traffic hilly terrain in and near Pound Ridge, North and South Salem, and in Ridgefield Connecticut.

On the return, we will stop in White Plains, with a convenient departure point via Metro North.

Those joining at Mt. Kisco and leaving via train from White Plains will have a 73 mile ride with 5,300 feet of ascent. Those starting from Central Park and departing the ride in White Plains will get in a hilly century (100.7 miles, 6,417 feet of climbs).  Those doing the full ride, roundtrip from Central Park, will do 132 miles with 7,300 feet of climbs.

There will be regular but SHORT (10 minutes) breaks as indicated on the Ride with GPS route, at the 21, 37, 53, 76 (longer break for lunch in South Salem), 101 and 110 (slightly longer break for snack in White Plains) mile marks.

Some of us have to be back in the City by 5 pm so we will have guidelines as far as timing goes.  We will arrive at the Mt. Kisco Subway shop at approximately 9 a.m., and we plan to get into White Plains at approximately 3:00 pm. In order to meet these guidelines we will be riding at a consistent 16-18 MPH pace on the flats for long stretches. Hills will be at your own pace, regroup at the top...but there are a LOT of hills!  To meet these guidelines we will be averaging 12 MPH (including lunch and other breaks) during the hilly 73 mile middle portion of the ride. Please realistically asses your ability to do this ride, and consider doing less than all of it if you haven't already ridden 100+ miles this season.  There will be no point-drop-sweep.

A final version of the cue sheet will be uploaded to ride page before the ride.  Please do not upload any gpx or tcx files from Ride with GPS until Saturday night because the route is subject to tweaking until then.

Please bring your Metro-North bike pass, two spare tubes and air supply, sun screen, pocket food, cash, and anything else you need to be comfortable on a long, hilly and challenging ride.
