Putnam Trailway from Brewster to Van Cortlandt Park
Primary tabs
We will ride the entire length of the Putnam Trailway again but this time in reverse order:) We'll take the 8:47 AM train from Grand Central and arrive in Brewster at 10:11 AM and we'll ride the trail back to the Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. You can return from there either by the #1 train which is right next to the park or you can ride 2.5 miles to Riverdale and take Metro North Train to Grand Central.
The route is mostly traffic-free as it runs along paved trailways with very few connecting sections running on roads. The route is pretty flat and going back to NYC we'll be dropping elevation gradually so the ride may appear easier. Except for few nasty hills to climb out of Brewster, that is:)
THIS IS A MODERATE RIDE. NOT FOR BEGINNERS!
We'll be cruising at 15mph. You need a road bike or a light hybrid. No mountain bikes, no heavy cruisers, no knobby tires. Folders are OK if they have skinny tires. If you haven't done any 50+ rides this season then this is not a ride for you.
The ride is very pleasant with long stretches of woodlands, marshes and farms with few small, quiet towns along the way. It passes over streams and rivers, along ponds and reservoirs with several cute bridges along the way.
We'll stop at Stuart's Farm for some delicious fresh fruit. The lunch will be about half way, we'll get food at Tazza Cafe in Millwood, like last time, but we'll carry it 5 miles and eat in the park.
We'll meet at he main concourse inside Grand Central, find us in the vicinity of the round information booth. Please be there at 8:15 and buy a ticket before boarding the train. We'll be getting on the train at 8:30. You can meet us in Brewster too: at 10:15 just outside the train station. Do not be late. Unless agreed otherwise do not meet us anywhere along the route, especially if you're new to 5BBC: you have to meet us either at Grand Central or Brewster train station.
NO CREDIT CARDS ARE ACCEPTED ON THE TRAIN. Buy the ticket from a vending machine or from a ticket booth before getting on the train.
