Poughkeepsie-Kingston Loop

Saturday, August 30, 2014 - 07:15

This is an Advanced Moderate Ride for experienced cyclists only. This is not a beginner ride. A road bike or light hybrid is required, no mountain bikes, no folders, no heavy hybrids, no knobby tires. Your bike has to be in very good shape and you need to be self-reliant and be able to maintain 15-17 mph pace for 25 miles with only few quick rest stops. There will be no bailouts along the way. The ride is pretty hilly at times with two long climbs and one killer hill. The ride is all on roads with traffic.

Bring at least two bottles of water and enough snacks to survive 25 mile stretch with no services.

For those who did my other recent rides from Poughkeepsie, you know what to expect :) This will be just like the other rides but a bit more hilly, however, shorter than the Gunks ride. Please email me if you have questions: bikerides@a-world.net. I'll be happy to answer them! If you're prepared properly, this ride is a blast! It's very scenic and rural.

We take the 7:43 am train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie. We meet in the main concourse area, in the vicinity of the round information booth, by the unused ticket windows. Please be at the station no later than 7:15 am and buy a round trip ticket to Poughkeepsie from the ticket machines before getting on the train. We get on the train at 7:30 sharp. Also, get breakfast to eat on the train, we will only stop for lunch around 12:30 - 1:00 pm.

NO CREDIT CARDS ON THE TRAIN! Buy the ticket at the station!

The train arrives in Poughkeepsie at 9:39 am and we start rolling promptly at 10:00 am. We ride the 25 miles to Kingston with only one or two very brief rest and photo stops. Beautiful views of Hudson River not to be missed! If all goes well we should be in Kingston by 1:00 maybe even 12:30. Lunch at Italian restaurant and quick ride back to Poughkeepsie. Couple of photo stops but quicker overall pace to try to catch the 5:39 pm express back to NYC (arrives at GC at 7:14). If we miss that then 5:54 pm.

Do not be late! The days are getting shorter and we want to return to NYC before dark.

Please bring:

- helmet (REQUIRED)
- MTA Train Bike Permit (REQUIRED)
- lightweight bike lock
- two spare bike tubes
- pump
- two bottles of water or hydration pack
- FOOD
- cell phone
- lunch money
