Ft. Totten Private Tour of Civil War Battery

Friday, December 3, 2021 - 09:30

Please join us on this Friday adventure as we ride to Ft. Totten for a private tour of the visitors center, water battery and ammo room. Built in 1862, Fort Totten is a Civil War era fort located in northern Queens, near the Throgs Neck Bridge across the water from Fort Schuyler in the Bronx.  The two forts sit where the East River and Long Island Sound meet, and the idea at the time was that any invaders approaching from the Sound would be prevented from entering the East River for an attack on NYC.  IMPORTANT - proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required to enter the indoor spaces (visitors center and ammo room).

We will be riding on many greenways, up the Joe Michael's mile into Ft. Totten for this private tour.  Lunch will be Bagel & Co. Cafe with indoor and outdoor seating.  Our ride continues through Jamaica Estates to Captain Tilly Park, which has a natural pond located in a depression caused by a receding glacier.  The pond contains a bird sanctuary and is known as the smallest island in the smallest natural body of water.

This will be a moderate-lite ride.  Please be able to maintain 12 mph on the greenways.
