Liberty Bell Art Installation, Ft Tilden, Beach, maybe Swim

"Augmented Reality/AR" Art over the Ocean!
"Augmented Reality/AR" Art over the Ocean!
Saturday, July 18, 2020 - 08:00

Enjoy this refreshing take on ART + OCEAN.  Ride's focus will be on seeing our wonderous virtual art installations, enjoying steady pacing on the bikeways, getting some beach time, and probably getting into the H2O as well. Pace will be slightly above moderate, but ground can be tricky at times, so this is an Advanced Moderate ride and skill level. And we're starting early to get out and back before the crowds and the peak heat of the day. Start and finish will be at a convenient set location in Prospect Park (but not the usual one !). Route map/cue and location will be emailed to confirmed registrants. Ride as a group; no point-drop-sweep except in a few possible instances.

Now back to the art - - this is a whimsical and fabulous "augmented reality" art installation - - "Liberty Bell" - - with different iconic Liberty Bell visual/musical versions shown simultaneously in 6 U.S. cities (Boston, D.C, Philadelphia, Charleston, Selma, and NYC's very own Rockaway).  At the new Shirley Chisholm Park there's a representative Liberty Bell. At an abandoned battery at Ft. Tilden there's a bell as an homage to Hurricane Sandy.

Our route will take us to the exact destinations for premium art viewing. Along the way we'll stop briefly at Canarsie Pier, and cover some great bike path miles.  At Ft Tilden the byways can get a bit worn and in disrepair (heck, it's a decommissioned army base, after all). So this is not the time to break out your bestest carbon fiber steed with skinny minny tires (leader is using a hybrid with high pressure "35" measured tires).

After the viewings we will R&R somewhere along a quieter spot on the beach, maybe even take a dip (leader has been jonesing to SWIM this summer), and there are rinse-off showers at adjacent Jacob Riis beach, which we pass on the way home.

Check out the NY Times article:  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/02/arts/design/liberty-bell-nancy-baker-cahill.html   And download the free app in advance from artist Nancy BAker Cahill's website, preferably onto an I-phone (or maybe a Chrome browser for we Android types), and then use the app to "see and hear" the art once at the sites. https://www.4thwallapp.org/

BRING:  Something to sit/lay on at the beach, something to get wet in. Leader is bringing a single sheet pareo as beach blanket/changing room/drying towel, and a bathing suit (top worn under bike jersey; bottom donned at some suitable point). BYO lunch or lots of nibbles, as we won't make a major lunch pickup stop. Bring plenty of sun protection, hydration and carrying capacity for hydration.

FOR SURE:  Please review all club, legal and health guidelines on COVID-safe participation. Bring/use a (land) mask.
