The Headless Horseman Ride to Sleep Hollow

This ride begins at the end of the #1 Train at Broadway & West 242nd Street in the Bronx.  We'll ride north up Broadway to Sleepy Hollow, the site of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and the Headless Horseman.   We’ll travel through the scenic Hudson River towns of Yonkers, Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow before arriving at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. On the way we’ll stop at Sunnyside for a tour of Washington Irving’s meticulously restored home (Admission is $12, $10 for seniors).

From there we’ll continue north to the Statue of the Headless Horseman and the Old Dutch Church, where the Headless Horseman is supposedly buried. We’ll enter the cemetery for a stop at Washington Irving’s grave.  Washington Irving lived in Sleepy Hollow and is famous for his short stories, including “Rip Van Winkle.”  Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden, William Rockefeller and Brooke Astor are all buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. 

After the cemetery we’ll head back down Broadway to Lefteris Restaurant for excellent Greek food, followed by an optional short walk around Tarrytown. From there we’ll ride over to the South County Trail and take it to Van Courtland Park and the end of the #1 Train.

Note:  This ride has several hills on Broadway in Yonkers and one in Hastings. Otherwise it is relatively flat.  The South County Trail back is very flat.

Bring a bike in good condition, a bike lock, a spare inner tube, and money for lunch and $12 for admission to Sunnyside.
