State Line Lookout + Cruisin' 9W

Sunday, November 13, 2016 - 08:00

Fabulous weather upcoming this Sunday, so let's cruise to the wonderful views at State Line Lookout Park.

We can look forward to circumnavigating Devil's Tower amidst mega-mansions in Alpine NJ, then dropping off the back side of the Palisades, and biking thru tony and quaint Rockleigh back to 9W.  One climb thru Columbia's Lamont Observatory and campus brings us to the Old 9W entrance to State Line Park, which is our destination.

At that "summit" our perch is high atop the lava sill that created the Palisades, eye level with soaring hawks and awash with magnificent scenery, foliage, and vistas up and down the Hudson.  Of course, a light repast inside the park's charming rustic cafe! ETA 12:30 return to NYC side GWB, which leaves the bulk of the day to slot in other enjoyments or tasks.

Here's our route:  http://tinyurl.com/j2gln28

Total mileage = 30.  Need to be able to ride as a group, steady 14 pace on the flats, no point-drop-sweep.  Must have good bike handling skills and ability to ride consistently, without frequent stops.  Suitable for road bikes, or hybrids with higher performance tires. All paved roads but a tad bumpy on parts of "Old 9W" (cracks in concrete road bed) as we access State Line Park.

BRING:  $ cash for food/bevs, suitable lock for bike, spirit of adventure, the usual bike things. Dress in layers for the weather.

MEET:  NW corner of Cabrini Blvd and W. 177th Street, dismounted on the sidewalk by the playground.  Please leave time in advance to use the facilities inside GWB terminal if you need to before we take off.  Be on time and prepared to ride.
