Newark Outback III

THE INDUSTRIAL OUTBACK, THAT IS

10:00 AM Newark Penn Station (Ferry Street side),You can take Path or NJ Transit from 34 Street (Path-WTC is the most direct line). 30 miles, an easy pace, and very few climbs.

This is our third attempt at the Outback, so fear not! And moved from August to a cooler September venue.

Yes, 5BBC morphs into Newark Rough Riders, a.k.a. Brick City Rogues for the day, taking you on a one-way adventure to Newark's industrial netherland -- that strip of misery and sorrow between the Arthur Kill and the airport, dotted with refineries, trucks, containers, and small isolated villages, unimaginably remote and pristine. The rough part, though, is really the fear we need to work out: the miles of desolate roads, with huge simmering refineries with nary a soul in sight and the metal planking we'll ride out on into the Kill itself, which seems to stretch eternally into a watery void. Road bikes are fine, but razor-thin tires are not ideal for RR track hopping we'll be doing. Ride ends in the quaint seaside village of Perth Amboy, where the long-abandoned Amboy-Tottenville ferry terminal sits; lunch is at the Barge, across from the Perth Amboy Yacht Club. Return is via NJ Transit. Note: Air Quality Index of 100+ cancels.
